Edition III, Versiliadanza in collaboration with Edizioni della Meridiana and the Andrej Tarkovskij International Institute, promotes a series of events dedicated to the figure of Andrej Tarkovskij that is part of the program of the Florentine Summer 2016. The project is part of the celebrations for the thirty years of the death of one of the most important masters of international cinema, strongly linked to Florence, which welcomed him in the eighties. In 1985, the City of Florence granted asylum to the Russian director, exiled, who before his death in Paris found his home in Palazzo Vegni, in Via San Niccolò, where today the International Institute Andrei Tarkovsky is based.
The meeting, which will take place at the altana of the Museo Novecento, is part of a series of events distributed in places of excellence of the city, designed as a unique opportunity to re-discover, through the architecture of the chosen locations, the poetics of the director; an infinite, profound, unitary poetics, punctuated by its religious sense of life, by its transcendent gaze towards the absolute and the meaning of “image”.

L’Institut International Andrei Tarkovskij, founded in Paris in 1987 by Robert Bresson, Mstislav Rostropovich, Krzysztof Zanussi, Maximillian Shell and Larissa Tarkovskij, is based on the director’s idea of creating an international academy of arts. After his death, the main purpose became to promote his work, through the publication of his writings and the organization of events and conferences, and to encourage the development of the figurative arts by supporting artists whose inspiration has the same ideal source of the director, with particular regard to the Russian tradition. Since 1987, many documents from Tarkovsky’s archives, including diaries and the volume Sculpting Time, have been published in more than 15 languages. In 1992, he opened the Andrei Tarkovsky International Institute in Florence, with the aim of spreading Tarkovsky’s work in Italy. The Institute organizes cultural initiatives, exhibitions, retrospectives and concerts inspired by the cinema of the Russian artist. In Florence all the director’s archives were collected, including photographic ones, and the work of cataloguing the material is carried out with the scientific collaboration of the Archival Superintendence for Tuscany. In 2002 the archive was notified by the Italian State.
