In 1963, an important body of works by Ottone Rosai was donated to the Municipality of Florence by the artist’s widow, Francesca Fei, and his brother, Oreste. The estate is grouped into two thematic series of portraits, the Tondini series and a series of his Friends made between the 1940s and 1950s, and group of paintings depicting views of Florence dating from the years 1954 and 1955. The Museo Novecento thus intends to pay homage to Rosai, a master of 20th century Tuscan art, whose paintings, in the years of maturity, are characterized by an original style blending harsh realism with an expressionist technique.
