On Tuesday 24 June 2014, on the day of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the city of Florence, the Museo Novecento will open to the public. At 12 noon, after the ribbon cutting by the Mayor Dario Nardella and the city authorities, it will be possible to visit for the first time the new museum dedicated to Italian art of the twentieth century.
From De Chirico to Morandi, from Emilio Vedova to Renato Guttuso, up to the Florentine section at the Venice Biennale, the Museo Novecento combines two natures: of a civic museum, through a story that links the civic collections of the twentieth century to the history of the city, and an ‘immersive’ museum, integrating the city’s heritage with evidence of national and international artistic events, which have marked the territory since the second half of the 1960s.
The exhibition venue of the ancient Spedale delle Leopoldine in Piazza Santa Maria Novella – which houses more than 300 works divided into 15 rooms – will be open to all, free and open, until 10 pm.
