The video the exception by Rä Di Martino, one of the most renowned artists on the national and international scene, who makes her way into the Room space of the Museo Novecento from October 25, 2019 to February 13, 2020, continuing the cycle of exhibitions and interventions by female artists started with Maria Lai and continued later with Sandra Vásquez de la Horra.
The exception sees a statue abandoned in a forest, without legs and without an arm, blocked and lost. Awakened, she begins to make small movements, similar to a dance. Although he becomes aware of his condition as a mutilated statue, perhaps unchanged for centuries, he wants to let himself go to the melody he hears. The music, nostalgic and romantic, is a reworking of the Flashdance love theme, which calls us into question in turn, letting distant memories emerge. The statue does its best to keep pace, trying to move bones or muscles it does not have, in a movement that appears both as an incredible effort and as an exercise aimed at containing a charge of long dormant energy.
Rä di Martino’s video seems to have incorporated this long history of relationships between the human being and his own double, inserting it into a narrative that is colored with veiled compassion for this broken statue. If the Italian Renaissance was born from the fragmented statues of Ancient Rome, which reappeared under the rubble of temples, the new Renaissance of art imagined by Rä di Martino was born from a cyborg who, abandoned in the woods, seems to want to dance once again, before to fall asleep, perhaps forever, waiting for a new resurrection.
Rä di Martino
(Rome, 1975) studied at Chelsea College of Art and Slade School of Art in London, then lived in New York from 2005 to 2010; he now lives and works in Rome. He has exhibited in institutions such as the Tate Modern in London, MoMA PS1 in New York, Palazzo Grassi in Venice, GAM and Fondazione Sandretto Rebaudengo in Turin, Macro and MAXXI in Rome, Museion in Bolzano, MCA in Chicago, Hangar Bicocca and PAC in Milan. He has participated in international film festivals such as Festival del film Locarno, VIPER Basel, Transmediale, Berlin, New York Underground Film Festival, Kasseler Dokfest, Torino Film Festival, and at the Venice Film Festival, winning the SIAE Award, the Gillo Award in 2014. Pontecorvo and a special mention at the Nastri d’Argento with the film The Show MAS Go On (2014). His first feature film Controfigura (2017) also premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won a mention at the Silver Ribbons. This year he developed the AFTERALL project with the support of the Mibac award: Italian Council in collaboration with the Volume! Foundation, the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen and Mostyn, Wales, finally joining the permanent collection of the MADRE in Naples.
