Sunday 2 October the Metropolitan Sunday is back, a day in which all residents of the Metropolitan City of Florence have the opportunity to visit the city museums for free. Citizens will also be able to take part in the numerous visits and activities scheduled in the various places thanks to the support of GIOTTO, a love brand of F.I.L.A. Italian Lapis and Affini Factory, and of Lucart.
It is an October full of new events for the city of Florence. The great monographic exhibition Tony Cragg. Transfer will be open at the Museo Novecento, which allows you to appreciate the artist’s wonderful sculptures and drawings; this is counterbalanced by the exhibition Passione Novecento. From Paul Klee to Damien Hirst, who exhibits prestigious works by some 20th century masters, acquired by private Florentine and Tuscan collectors. An intense journey through the works of Italian and international artists such as Giorgio De Chirico, Ottone Rosai, Lucio Fontana, Joan Mirò, Ai Weiwei, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst. At Forte di Belvedere is the last opening day for the exhibitions dedicated to female artists: on the one hand the solo Play It Again by the young and talented Rä di Martino and on the other the exhibition Photographers! presented and promoted by the Alinari Foundation for Photography and the CR Firenze Foundation, in collaboration with the Municipality of Florence.

The visit allows you to get closer to the work of the great sculptor Tony Cragg by deepening the history and analysis of some of the works on display. The trace of the extensive and profound research developed by the artist over the decades, aimed at exploring the multiple potentialities of the sculptural language and materials, will be outlined. All of Cragg’s work can in fact be seen as an ode to the infinite possibilities of “form” – whose inspiring muse is nature, which embraces both the microscopic and the infinite – from time to time generated thanks to a careful planning and a wise use of the material.

The language of sculpture underwent an important transformation in the twentieth century, infinitely expanding the range of materials, techniques and subjects and offering new perspectives on our relationship with the work of art. One of the protagonists of this profound renewal is undoubtedly Tony Cragg, who has revolutionized the world of sculpture by opening it up to unexpected research, processes and results. The exhibition itinerary will allow you to explore these aspects and appreciate the major masterpieces of the sculptor, and then try your hand at an art studio in which to experiment with the creative and artistic possibilities of drawing and modeling a small sculpture.

The visit offers an ideal itinerary in the art of the twentieth century, thanks to a range of extremely significant masterpieces by the greatest artists of the century: from Klee to Mirò, from Wahrol to Basquiat, from Hirst to Emin without forgetting the very Italian De Chirico, Rosai, Guttuso, Burri or Rotella, the participants will be able to grasp the peculiarities of their poetics and their work, appreciating particularly representative results, embracing in a single glance testimonies of the languages of painting, sculpture and photography. Particular emphasis will be placed on the values of collecting and patronage, closely related to the history of these works and, more generally, to the development of art history over the centuries.

Each artist tells his time and his world through the lenses of sensitivity and technique, indissolubly connected: thanks to a special animated visit, intertwined with a “treasure hunt” aimed at identifying and identifying the details of the works on display, we will discover how to recognize the artists and their style, from the unmistakable brushstrokes of Renato Guttuso to the associated surfaces of Giorgio De Chirico, from the typographic screens of Roy Lichtenstein to the cracking of the material by Alberto Burri.

The visits allow you to deepen the thought and work of the artist Rä di Martino, who with the Play it again exhibition offers the general public videos and installations of playful depth for each of us, and to appreciate the works of great photographers, intertwining looks and outcomes of the twentieth century – taken from the Alinari collections – and creations by contemporary authors and leading to the discovery of the unpublished archive of the multifaceted Edith Arnaldi, aka Futurist Rosa Rosà. The route also allows you to learn about the history and characters of the extraordinary military architecture of Forte di Belvedere.
