Dialogues of the gods
By Luciano di Samosata. Show by Massimiliano Civica and I Sacchi di Sabbia.
With Gabriele Carli, Giulia Gallo, Giovanni Guerrieri, Enzo Illiano, Giulia Solano. Production: Compagnia Lombardi-Tiezzi Lombardi-Tiezzi/I Sacchi di Sabbia, with the support of Armunia Festival Inequilibrio – Castiglioncello.
The fortune of Luciano – Greek writer and rhetorician, of Syrian origin, born in Samosata in 125 A.D. – is linked above all to the series of so-called Dialogues of the Gods: an exquisitely literary divertissement, in which the author, drawing from the heritage of myth, offers an original, ironic, surprisingly everyday representation of classical cosmogony. The “familiar” clashes between Zeus and Hera, the constant complaints about Eros’ wrongdoings, the gossip between Dionysus, Hermes and Apollo resist the challenge of time, continuing to make us smile, indeed rising to topos of many mechanisms that will animate then the modern comedy.
It is surprising how, after centuries, these Dialogues continue to “entertain” the listener: these delightful miniatures, chiseled in an agile and witty phrasing, continue to be “speeches to pass the time”. Together for the first time I Sacchi di Sabbia and Massimiliano Civica, with the support of the Lombardi-Tiezzi Company, wonder precisely about the deep meaning of the word “entertainment”, to the amused search for obsolete forms to “pass the time”.
Reunited under the name “Il Carrozzone”, Federico Tiezzi and Sandro Lombardi made their debut in Florence in 1972, establishing themselves as one of the flagship experiences of the then-emerging “theatre-image”which claimed the rights of vision over those of textuality as the sole referent of the theatre. Established at European level in the late seventies with the two works Breakpoint and Nervous Collapse, in 1982 the group takes the acronym of “Criminal Warehouses”. With the new name of “Compagnia Lombardi – Tiezzi”, since the eighties the two founders have dedicated themselves to the production of works in which the tendency to the connection between the various arts (music, visual arts, dance) It is intertwined with an increasingly tighter dramaturgical approach from the textual point of view.
The company has been present, from 1978 to today, in the main international festivals: Brussels, Liège, Amsterdam, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Vienna, London, Paris, Barcelona, Lisbon, Belgrade, Epidaurus, Berlin, New York, Moscow, Tokyo. He also won numerous awards, including the Mondello Prize (1982) and several Ubu Awards. Over the years he collaborates, among others, with Alighiero Boetti, Mario Schifano, Alessandro Mendini, Gae Aulenti, Edoardo Sanguineti, Mario Luzi, Giovanni Giudici Giancarlo Cardini, Azio Corghi, Giacomo Manzoni, Riccardo Muti, Amancio Prada, Luca Ronconi, Salvatore Sciarrino, Virgilio Sieni, Ed Spanjard, Peter Stein, Jeffrey Tate.
The Sandbags, born in Pisa in 1995, are distinguished by the ability to bring together popular tradition and cultural research, going from time to time in the creative exploration of different lands, from literature to cinema, from comics to opera. In constant oscillation between comic and tragic, their work is concretized in a language in balance between the arts (visual arts, dance, music), in the search for unusual performative places, and always with a look alive and attentive to the territory in which the spectacular event is placed. Over the years, the Company has distinguished itself on the national level, receiving important awards for the particularity of a research marked by the reinvention of a contemporary popular scene.
